Dune is a famous science fiction novel series written by Frank Herbert. The series consists of 6 main books written by Frank Herbert himself from 1965 to 1985. After his death, his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson continued to write many more novels set in the Dune universe.

The story of Dune takes place in a far future, when humanity has conquered the universe. The empire concentrates power in the hands of the Padishah Emperor and the great Houses. They compete for control of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of “spice”, a substance that enhances mental abilities and prolongs life, as well as serving as fuel for space travel.

In part 1, House Atreides arrives to govern Arrakis but is annihilated by the rival House Harkonnen. Paul Atreides, son of Duke Leto, escapes and gradually becomes the legendary Kwisatz Haderach of the native Fremen. Paul leads the Fremen in battle and establishes a new empire.

The following parts expand the world and explore profound themes of religion, ecology, and politics. Over thousands of years, Paul’s descendants face great upheavals that threaten the survival of humanity.

Dune is considered a literary masterpiece, successful in building a vast, vivid, multi-faceted fictional world with issues closely relevant to reality. The series has had a profound influence on the modern sci-fi genre and has been an inspiration for many later works.
