Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
This is the 2nd book in The Giver series by Lois Lowry and it is set in the future, that comes after civilization has ended. The story tracks a part of Kira’s life who has a twisted leg, but a “threader” with gifts. This dystopian society should have caused her bad leg to slow her down and then be left to die due to exposure. Although, Kira’s mother is still devastated by her husband’s death during a “long hunt”, she did not want to give her daughter up, and that is what saved Kira.
The novel begins with Kira being a teenager setting off away from “the Field”, which is a place where she spent a vigil next to her dead mother’s body for 4 days while her spirit has completely passed. As she walks slowly back towards the rest of the cott, that went through burning to kill any trace of disease that caused her mother’s death.
Kira thinks about what she is going to do after her mother’s death. While on her way, she meets Matt who is her friend, telling her that Vandara plans use Kira’s land for their chickens and children, but she would have to force off the land 1st.
Even if she is aware of Vandara’s bad attitude, Kira still plans to fight because it is the land her parents left for her. After a short confrontation, Vandara did not stop and takes her case to the Council of Guardians. During the hearing, Kira is given a defender named Jamison, who succeeds in arguing that, even if Kira should not have been given the permission to live, exceptions are possible. The Council comes to a decision that the land can go to Vandara and Kira will take the role of the Threader, where her new residence will be in the Council Edifice. Here everything she needs will be provided so she won’t have to worry about it.
Kira’s new life as the Threader will continue as you listen along to this audiobook and discover what will happen in Kira’s life and her new role.
