As the boy comes to his senses he observes that he is not alone, there are animals with him in the lifeboat. Among those animals is a tiger that does not seem to be in a good mode at all. The two however are forced to co-exist because they need each other in the lonely Pacific Ocean. Yann Martel describes the hunger pangs that the two go through together and the bitter cold at night that makes them more than just friends. Presence of the tiger is a symbol of life for the boy who has lost everything that he was previously blessed with.

The High Mountains of Portugal and Beatrice and Virgil lacked such amazing company of two living beings that are dangerous for one another but the circumstances force them to co-exist. After each passing day the desperation between the two increases but they control it along with the hunger that starts to raise madness in them.
