He was there for the investigation of a mysterious killing case. The victim there was the previous warden. Joe Pickett had every reason to take that case very personally, rather than professionally.
If one thing can be said about this book in particular and Joe Pickett’s novel series in general then C. J. Box is getting better with every new novel in the series. Out of Range is by far the best novel in this series.
