Another series with crime tales involved start with a bang as we start listening about the first mission of chief inspector Gamache. Louise Penny in the voice of Ralph Cosham gives mysteries a new dimension. That’s why the writer intentionally uses the word Modern for the detective department in order to convey the true motive of the writer.

The murder case that opens in the south of Montreal appears to be a simple accident at the start or this is what is told to the inspector. Gamache on the other hand can smell whenever there is a crime, so he instead of believing the locals starts hunting for clues. Luckily he starts finding clues one after the other, sadly the clue don’t portray a nice story.

    Still Life

The death of the poor Jane Neal was not an accident first of all and secondly the one who did all this was not an ordinary Bow Hunter. Something tragic was attached to the whole incident and most of the people present at the site were trying to hide it. The writer intentionally knits the first part in such a way that we can easily understand the true quality and ability of the man who is on this special task. Armand Gamache is trust no one sort of a person, the only one he trusts is his own self and the rest is just a smoke screen for him.

Courage and cunning features of the main character can surely be understood of we go through other books like A Better Man: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel and  A Fatal Grace. The writer possesses a tendency of describing the character in a single flow but still keeps certain aspects of the character buried deep that emerge when the time is right.
