The murder case that opens in the south of Montreal appears to be a simple accident at the start or this is what is told to the inspector. Gamache on the other hand can smell whenever there is a crime, so he instead of believing the locals starts hunting for clues. Luckily he starts finding clues one after the other, sadly the clue don’t portray a nice story.

Something tragic was attached to the whole incident and most of the people present at the site were trying to hide it. The writer intentionally knits the first part in such a way that we can easily understand the true quality and ability of the man who is on this special task. Armand Gamache is trust no one sort of a person, the only one he trusts is his own self and the rest is just a smoke screen for him.
