A new mother appeared to be a nice lady at the start and later her true colors just seized everyone. She was a witch and with her dark magic, she took control of all the male members of the house.
Sorcha being a girl had the extra edge because of which she escaped the deadly magic. She hid in the forest and vowed to save her brothers no matter what happens. It was her duty to save those who love her more than anything in the world.
As she started the quest she too faced terrible things including a love affair that tried to bind her. Son of the Shadows and Child of the Prophecy will unlock the mysteries further as this one just provided an introduction to many things. Terry Donnelly keeps the narration real slow so that the listener can understand each new point clearly. If there remains any confusion in the mind regarding this part then you would not be able to understand the next parts.
