Mental condition can play many roles and can have impact on your mind in many ways; the novel too discusses the mental condition of such a man who thinks that he is isolated. The brother that lives with him is not too friendly sort of a guy that one can hang with, sister is not living with them anymore thus overall it is a lonely life.
In such scenario he discovers a new thing in himself i.e the tendency of liking boys instead of girls. Lesbian for sure the man who is already falling in age urges for relationships that are rare to find. Also he is not the only odd character in the locality as the place where he lives he full of such people who are usually hated by the society. One is a drug dealer and then there is a woman who is known for her affairs with several men.
The society is not corrupt it is just messed up because everyone is need of one particular thing i.e home. They want a place where they can settle and have a family of their own, a thing that has been lacking for ages now and is affecting their minds and soul. Bryan Washington really brings out the true psychology of the poor black people living in America and their issues are surely highlighted.
Everything is raw in this novel even the narration by Dion Graham, JD Jackson, Bahni Turpin and Bryan Washington himself have played an awesome role overall. Different characters have been given different voice and pitch the accent though is same because all the characters are black people.
