Adventures of the Courtney series are never-ending, there is always war at the next corner for the heroes to get indulged in. Author Wilbur Smith mixes cultural and social issues along with personal ones to make stories more interesting than ever. The fourth part comes to the Great War era when the fighting involved fighter jets too. Fighter pilots from different regions joined the war to prove their worth for their land. Among those pilots was the leading name of Michael Courtney who destroyed every base of the enemy in his way. In his enthusiasm Michael went too far into the enemy zone and then finally his plane got hit by the shells.
Making a crash landing was the only option left for him in this scenario. His plane landed in front of Centaine’s garden. The French lady found in the enemy a companion which she was looking for and tendered him with love and care. Relation with the injured pilot made Centaine pregnant and soon she found herself heading towards South Africa for a shelter.
When the Lion Feeds and The Sound of Thunder were about men, this novel is especially written in praise of a woman who is pregnant and is fighting for her life and the life of her child. Whether there are villains or dangerous crocodiles in her way she fights her way out with one thing in mind i.e a good and safe future for her child. But for this kind of future, she has to look into the eyes of death directly and then fight with it with full courage and hope for a better future.
