The story in this novel revolves around Richard Papen who until his 19th birthday had never been to New England. Soon came the time when he joined Hampden College there and was in no time secured by the dark and sweet rhythms of the campus life.
In particular, it was all due to a group of 5 students. The members of this elite group seemed to be highly unapproachable. However, Richard was accepted and soon become part of the inner circle. He learned there about a horrifying secret that connects them all. It was a secret about a significant incident in the forest at night where some ancient rite was brought to life and then to a brutal death.
The Secret History is a well-written novel but it makes a much darker read. The author was good at exploring the lives of the different vulnerable coming of agers in situations that challenge then and the change them eventually.
