Kathy Reichs selects different topics for the novels and the only topic perhaps that was not yet touched was human trafficking. A girl found dead appear to be a hit and run case for the police but after investigating the case Tempe thinks that it is an entirely different case. None of the police officers had known that such thing was continuing in their region or perhaps they were also involved in it.
Tempe launches herself in the case like thunder this time because she knows what is at stake. Soon there is another dead body found that is again of a girl and her body shows the tale of illegal acts on it. Purse of the girl had some documents in it and in those documents was a card of a rich man who died some months ago. Quite possible that the businessman was involved in all of it or the criminal world is trying to mislead Tempe from the case. Tempe has faced worst in Cross Bones and Break No Bones but she wants to reach the source this time because without it the whole investigation is a waste of time.
Also it is just not a single person that is involved rather a whole network is performing this hideous act. Linda Emond narrates Tempe as a frustrated character again because her daughter has signed for the army after the death of her boyfriend in Afghanistan. Tempe’s ex- husband Pete wants her to decide about their divorce once and for all but all of this cannot be decided in the middle of a case until she finds out that all of it is linked.
