Whenever there is an issue, Bree is on the spot and you don’t have to make a call for her now because she is the sheriff of the town. The previous part of the series brought the news that Bree is now officially working as the sheriff of her hometown and she has the power to look into every case of her own will. Melinda Leigh has allowed Bree’s character to develop in more than one way. Bree is psychologically stronger and she is not thinking about the past now rather she is concentrating on the future and the people that are her responsibility now.
Christina Traister starts narrating this part of the series as well with the same kind of pitch that is relishing. Bree finds a dead body in the Scarlet River, the name of the woman is Holly Thorpe and apparently, she had committed suicide. When the investigation is made by Matt and Bree they find out that someone actually killed Holly before throwing her into the river.
Holly had some issues with her husband and sister also her relationship with her boss was a bit messy. Everything started adding up and made the case a naughty thing to deal with. Bree and Matt also become the target during the investigation and they start looking for the killer before he gets rid of another one of the suspects. Seconds to Live had crazy characters in it and Hour of Need was spooky in theme. This book can be taken as an amalgam of those two classics. Author has surely improved in characterization and also in the creation of the plot over the years.
