This is the debut novel of the author, who later on went to produce a number of successful mystery thrillers. In this specific novel, What She Knew, the author actually explores the search of a mother for his missing son.

What She Knew

Rachel Jenner, a mother was walking in a park in Bristol along with Ben, her 8 years old son. Ben requested her mother if he could run ahead. It was just an ordinary and a simple request on a fine Sunday afternoon and there was absolutely no reason for Rachel to worry about, but only until when Ben vanishes.

Police was called and their search parties started to look for ben in all corners of the park and even beyond. Rachel was already in a very insecure frame of mind after her divorce recently and this episode made her life even worse. Hours and then a number of days passed without having any trace of Ben. Everybody associated with Rachel and Ben were questioned by the police, including the newly married former husband of Rachel, but to no avail. With the passage of time, media attention got hold of Rachel and the attitude or sentiments of public shifted from sympathy to suspicion with her.

A couple of recommended novels from Gilly Macmillan are I Know You Know and Odd Child Out.
