The novel is in prose form still the impact is supreme; the sensation cannot be neglected at any rate. Elizabeth Acevedo selection of words and the creation of situation is worth to observe and once someone puts a glance on it he cannot resist the temptation of listening to the whole of the book.
This one is about a pregnant girl whose life is passing through a tough phase as she faces one hurdle after the other. Still the determination and the zeal are unaltered as she moves further in life and in her pregnancy state too. Elizabeth Acevedo has not hired any other narrator for the book because she thought that only she could provide the audience the touch that this book needed.
No doubt the writer has successfully completed the job of the narrator too and without getting into any extreme state at the tough situations she manages to depict everything perfectly.
The only place where Emoni Santiago can let go of her feelings and can truly bring the magic within her to the scene. She prepares dishes like none other but still cannot work as a chef in an A rank restaurant because of her domestic issues still she does not try to restrict her inner magic. She lets her talent break free without any concern of facing any sort of competition or any effect on her personal life.
Everyone has a hidden talent or an inner gift that should not be kept incage because the more you try to hide your inner talent the more dull your life becomes. We can get an idea of author’s works after getting through other books like The Poet X and Clap When You Land.
There is no humor but the stories are written in a light mode with no drastic climax or tragedy it is just rise and fall in the emotions that are interesting to listen.
