Female characters are the main strength of this novel and the novel introduces different women belonging to different cultures and personalities. There are three major female characters, one of them is Lisbeth who is not in good relation with everything that is present around her including her parents and the rest of the family. She was given to an enslaved nurse right at the time of her birth so she spent a long time among those slaves. Now she is not with them but there is an attraction between her and the black slaves that her father owns.
Her mother loves her very much but Lisbeth somehow is not attracted to her mother, she thinks that there is a kind of emptiness in her. Lisbeth’s mother has not been able to fulfill that emptiness, her father is also not interested in her very much and the reason is unknown.
In such a situation, Mattie’s family attracts Lisbeth’s attention because she spent her early childhood with them. Laila Ibrahim has shown the brave steps which the main character takes in order to bring comfort to her heart. Scarlet Carnation is heart touching and once again the story hits the issues that existed in the past.
Paper Wife is unforgettable in its own way so none of these books are of the type which should be thrown aside. Bahni Turpin’s narration is like another blessing because it is clear and easy to understand. The voice does not drop at any stage and there is no mixing or pauses which will disturb the flow. It is the search of two women for their rightful place in the world.
