John Sandford’s thrillers have everything a person can dream of. The novels have high drama, politics, and crimes and then, of course, are the murders that are not of an ordinary kind at all.

The Virgil Flowers series is a bit different from the Lucas Davenport series in which the stories are not totally separated from one another. In Virgil’s, every crime is one of its kind. This time the case starts when Virgil investigates dognapping that does not appear to be quite threatening at the start at all.

Virgil just started the case just because he had nothing to do but the case leads to a completely new thing just when Virgil hears about the murder of a reporter. The novel also hints towards the meeting of a school board in which the board was discussing the proposal of killing the same reporter.

The novel is wonderful in the sense that the dog napping and the school board meeting are totally two different parts of the world but they combine in the case and makes a mess of Virgil’s mind as he starts to investigate the case a bit deeper.

The case takes us to science labs and it is apparent that the reporter was about to report something big. We haven’t seen the role of science in the previous parts Rough Country and Bad Blood so Virgil deals with something new this time. Eric Conger shows the same consistency in the narration department and Eric has continued well with the whole series and now his voice has become a permanent part of the Virgil show.

Another good thing is that Eric has not experimented too much with the tone and the pitch that’s why we are now immune to it in so many ways.
