I just finish Rebel Witch and I’m still trying to piece myself back together. Like… hello? Kristen Ciccarelli??? Why you do us like this?! 
I ain’t even kidding, this book got me going from screaming into the pillow to full-on sobbing in fetal position on the floor. And I’d do it all again tbh.
If you read The Crimson Moth (and if you didn’t, stop right now and go read it 
), then you already know this world don’t play nice. Witches hunted like animals. Love turned to betrayal. Enemies turned allies (or maybe lovers again?? ). This book picks up that chaos and turns it to pure madness. It’s like Ciccarelli said “oh y’all cried in book 1? lol. hold my broomstick.”
Rune Winters: Soft but Savage
Rune, Rune, Rune. This girl been through hell and back. And now she’s basically a fugitive witch with a death sentence on her name. I love her so bad. She’s powerful, but not invincible. Brave, but full of fear. And most of all? She feels real. Like yeah she cry. Yeah she doubt herself. But when it’s time to stand up? She light the fire, bro.
This ain’t the same girl from book 1. She done evolved. She got scars now—physical and emotional. And she’s stuck making deals with devils (ahem, Cressida). Honestly, I was scared for her the whole time. Not just scared she gon’ die—scared she’d lose herself.
Gideon Sharpe: My Broken, Angry Son
Gideon… oh my god this man is a mess and I love him.
Like yeah, he betrayed Rune in book 1. Yeah, he kinda wants her dead now. But deep inside??? He’s just a sad lil warboy who loved too hard and broke too fast. His POV??? PAIN. Every chapter he’s like “I must kill Rune… but also she smells like cinnamon and I’m sad.”
The emotional whiplash? Unmatched. Man’s out here saying “death to all witches” but the second Rune looks at him with those big hurt eyes he like 
And bro, the tension when they’re together again? Off. The. Charts. I was literally holding my breath during every scene like “kiss? stab? both?? ”
Enemies to Lovers to Enemies to… Lovers?
THE ROMANCE BROOOO 
This is what I live for. That slow, painful, morally gray yearning. That “I hate you but if you touch someone else I will commit a felony” energy. That “we shouldn’t, but the world is ending so maybe we should” vibe.
Rune and Gideon are literally everything. Their love story is not sweet. It’s not soft. It’s raw, bloody, complicated. And that’s what makes it real. It’s Romeo and Juliet but with more murder and magical genocide.
Every scene with them together? I’m sweating. I’m crying. I’m screaming. And when they start working together?? Like actually trusting each other again (kind of)? I was like “DON’T GIVE ME HOPE KRISTEN ”
And then she DID. And then she TOOK IT AWAY. Rinse and repeat for 400 pages. I ain’t mad. (ok maybe a little.)
Plot: Just One Explosion After Another
This book DO NOT slow down. From page one it’s like—Rune’s running. Gideon’s hunting. Cressida plotting. People dying. Secrets revealed. Prophecies fulfilled. Worlds burned. And I’m just out here, a simple audiobook listener, trying to breathe.
It’s all or nothing. The Republic might fall. The Reign of Witches might rise again. Rune’s stuck in the middle of it, and she got to choose: save herself or save everyone else?
Also shoutout to the side characters!! They weren’t just there to fill space—they had impact. Some got me mad. Some made me cry. Some I wanted to punch (looking at you, Cressida ), but they all mattered.
Narration? GORGEOUS.
Grace Gray? Icon. Legend. My queen. The way she voiced Rune??? So soft. So fierce. The pain, the doubt, the fire—all of it came through. She carried this story. Every voice distinct. Every emotion delivered with precision. There were scenes where her voice cracked and I swear my heart cracked too
There’s a moment near the climax (you’ll know it) where Rune makes a choice… and Grace’s delivery? I had to pause and just sit in silence. That’s how good it was.
Themes: Love, Power, and Sacrifice
This ain’t just a witchy fantasy with romance on the side. It’s about what you’re willing to give up. Your life. Your heart. Your soul. Rune got to face herself. Gideon got to face what he became. And us listeners? We got to face the fact that Kristen Ciccarelli is not gonna let anyone walk away clean.
There’s betrayal. There’s redemption. There’s love. There’s rage. And every choice hurt.
But that’s why it hits. You feel the consequences. No easy answers. No perfect hero. Just people trying to do right in a world that went wrong.

Rebel Witch wrecked me. But in the best way. It was epic. It was romantic. It was heartbreaking. And it was exactly the ending this duology deserved.
Kristen Ciccarelli wrote a story about love that survives betrayal. About power that corrupts and redeems. About fire—and what’s left when it burns everything away.
Rune and Gideon? They’ll live in my head forever. Probably rent-free. Probably crying. Probably holding knives to each other’s throats and whispering “I loved you anyway.”
