Claire is a mother at 14 years old and is not able to contact her son Gabe until they are able to bond together in the Nurturing Center of the community. Based on the detailed descriptions, the community has a clean yet emotionally repressing environment. It can now be said that the author is back to the setting where The Giver took place, while Claire being the contemporary of Jonas. Gabe and Jonas both leave, then Claire follows later on. After some time, she shows again and has acquired amnesia in an isolated village situated beneath the cliff. Claire lives here for years with a child healer named Alys, and then she regains her memory back. She is determined to find her son, so she sets off and meets the Trademaster. Her youth is given in exchange for his assistance in locating Gabe, who is now in the same village as Jonas and Kira his wife. Claire tells Gabe who she is, and Gabe needs to use his talent to spare the village. Gabe is also able to use his power to gain his mother’s youth back so that they can live the life they have lost during those years of searching and turmoil.
The story of Claire is established on its own, but at the same time it ends the final volume with the characters being reunited. There are sociopolitical themes and there is an undeniable message of resilience, determination, perseverance, and hope.
