Allen Eskens adds his latest to the literature in the shape of Joe Talbert who happens to be a college student with an assignment that can cause him a loss of grades if not completed. Joe was not serious about the assignment at first but then he realized that it was not a tough job to just collect the biography of an unknown person in the neighborhood. As time runs out Joe tries to find the right person for an interview and the one he finally find does not prove to be the right person at all.

The former soldier from Vietnam is found on his death bed in the hospital and when he starts telling about his life it is like a horrible nightmare. The man committed several crimes out of which a few were murders and some were rape attempts. After these hideous acts he was thrown out of job and into prison, now because of his illness he was set free because he was dying anyhow. Joe and Lila start to investigate on the man a little more and things get knit into patterns that trap the two in it.

It is like going into quicksand with no way out except to show patience and bear the pressure and pain. First book is a master piece in all respects whether you analyze the story line or plot it is just perfect.  The Shadows We Hide and Nothing More Dangerous are not bad books to continue with after feeling the drama and tragedy in this one. Zach Villa needed more energy to boast the book through narration, at times the narrator was just reading and then in investigation scenes he added force in the voice.
