Cal Hooper was once an active law enforcer in Chicago, his name was ample set fear in the hearts of the criminals. Then life fell all around him and he started losing grip on the things which he liked and loved most in his life. Domestic life troubled him more than his professional life as his wife left him all of a sudden and married someone else in front of his eyes.
In search of happiness, Cal left the town which he once governed and got settled in a small village where no one recognizes him. Living a peaceful life was his dream which became true after landing in this unknown town. However, the dream proved to be short-lived because soon Cal’s nose smelled crime all around in abundance. A boy comes to him with a terrible issue i.e his brother has gone missing with no clue at all.
The police also do not seem to be helping things out so Cal takes the case into his own hands. The more he investigated the more horrifying the situation became for him. Small Irish towns had more evil than Cal used to witness in big cities, someone was dumping deadly secrets in the town for decades.
Tana French gives some rest to Cal at the start to let him recover from his divorce and then the author gives the ex-cop a serious job. Roger Clark puts in a lot of changing tones during narration to depict the changes in the ex-law enforcer. In the Woods and The Likeness are also by Tana French, after listening to such books the audience can guess the class of the author. The sudden appearance of a destructive situation and the emergence of villains keep everyone active all the time.
