There are some police procedural as well along with the progress of the story that appear to be a little time consuming for most of the people but it was needed in order to give a reality touch. The dead body is in a precarious state this time and Eve Dallas herself gets so much involved in the condition of the dead body that she never gets the clue in the first glance. It is in later detailed examination that we come to know that the dead body has the first two letter of Eve Dallas’ name carved on it.

    Devoted in Death

This all mean one thing i.e the killer wants Eve to look for him and unless she finds him he will keep on delivering dead bodies to the police department. J.D. Robb continues the story on two different levels at the same time. On one side it is the race against time in order to catch the killer before he commits another sin and on the other hand there is a psychological race in the mind of Eve. The killer seems to be teasing her, the thing that she experienced in Obsession in Death as well.

But in that part the motives of the killer were clear this time it is all hidden. The secret however reveals itself in a bit later stage when we are told about Ella-Loo and Darryl her boyfriend in a detailed version. The wild dreams of this couple make them choose the evil way and it is a coincidence that the first letter of their names is also E and D.  Susan Ericksen goes on with that low soothing voice and the narrator never tries to stretch the vocal cords beyond their limit.
