Mammy by Donald McCaig is surely about a woman with an iron will, who had the passion to live her life according to her own desires or the way she wanted no matter what ever stood in her way she fought without hesitation for her goals and place in life. The story is surely a ray of hope for the modern women of America and Europe as well who usually feel themselves a slave in the current society.

Ruth the girl in the novel not only helps herself but also she holds tightly to the people who are present around her and needed her help in one way or the other. Her basic origin is Caribbean from where she is saved in a strange way, which some termed as a miracle as she was the sole survivor in the whole village.

    Ruth’s Journey

Henri and Solange bring her to America where she experiences different things in life like love that she had with Jehu Glen who was a black man and also the rough behavior of many people toward her throughout her life when she starts acting like a Mammy for different families.

Even the daughter of Solange never proved to be too friendly with her. Ruth fights for freedom that she never hade right from birth and not for once we see her cry or lose hope in life. Cherise Boothe narrates the whole thing excellently though it was a tough job but it is nicely done, we start liking the character more after the accurate narration in the most appropriate voice. The words are delivered at a normal pace that makes it more understandable as well.

The Sleep Room – Frank Tallis and The Priestly Sin – Andrew M. Greeley also  are among some of the good novels to read on or listen and enjoy.
